Four movements, one light layer and a look at the forecast: a simple way to choose a jacket that works in the real school-day routine.
A good jacket should pass the movement test
A jacket can look right in the mirror and feel very different once a backpack, long sleeves or a zipper enters the picture. Before focusing on the price tag, test it over the clothes a child will actually wear to school.
The goal is not to buy the largest possible size. Look for enough room to move and add a light layer without drooping shoulders, sleeves that hide the hands or a zipper that pulls. Two useful minutes in the fitting room can prevent a lot of debate at 7:42 a.m.

The 4-move test
Fit, mobility and real school-day use
1. Zip it over a normal layer
Try the jacket over a sweater or light hoodie similar to what will be worn at school. The zipper should close without pulling at the neck, chest or waist.
2. Reach and cross the arms
Ask the child to raise both arms, cross them and touch their shoulders. The jacket should move along without riding up sharply or restricting the shoulders.
3. Check cuffs and hood
Wrists should stay covered without the hands disappearing. If the jacket has a hood, make sure it does not block the child’s view when turning their head.
4. Add the backpack
Put on both straps and walk a few steps. If the jacket bunches tightly at the neck or limits movement, revisit the fit before deciding.

On August 20, 2026, Statistics Canada reported that children’s clothing prices had fallen 8.5% from June 2015 to June 2026 across Canada. That is national context, not a promise about the price or inventory at a specific store. Real value still depends on fit, actual use and local weather.
Environment and Climate Change Canada’s WeatherCAN provides current conditions plus hourly and seven-day forecasts for more than 10,000 Canadian locations. A morning check helps decide whether a lightweight jacket is enough or different protection is needed.
For cold weather, the Government of Canada recommends clothing layers with a wind-resistant outer layer, adjusted for temperature and activity. That general guidance does not make every lightweight jacket right for every forecast: always check conditions where you live.
