1. Take everything out
Put the contents on a table. Discard rubbish, return home items to their place and set aside anything you will not need tomorrow.
2. Keep the essentials
Start with keys, wallet, phone, required identification and personal medication. This small core should always be easy to spot.
3. Create three zones
Keep frequently used items near the opening, group the main work or school gear, and place backup items together in one small pouch.
4. Separate anything that can leak
Close drinks, snacks and personal products carefully, then keep them away from papers and devices. One washable pouch can prevent a major bottom-of-the-bag event.
5. Match the trip
Before closing the bag, remove anything that does not fit today’s route. Walking, cycling, public transit or driving all reward a load made of things you will actually use.

What goes in the bag depends on how you travel
On May 14, 2026, Statistics Canada reported that 244,000 people, or 1.4% of commuters nationwide, mainly cycled to work in 2025. It also noted that in 2021 the average trip took 22.8 minutes by car and 42.9 minutes by public transit.
Those figures describe Canada as a whole, not every city, province or individual trip. They do show why one bag may need to serve very different routines: just the essentials for a short ride, an extra layer or snack for a longer journey, and always a layout that does not require digging until Friday.
